New Zealand actors Jay Laga'aia and Craig Parker are playing key roles in a new American swords and sorcery television series being filmed around Auckland.

Filming of Wizard's First Rule, the first book in Terry Goodkind's popular The Sword of Truth books, began this week.

But the 22-episode series has been renamed Legend of the Seeker - apparently to avoid religious concerns among American audiences about sorcery.

Executive producers Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert told a comics and fantasy convention of the name change, and announced the New Zealand actors, Entertainment Weekly reported.

The syndicated series from Disney-ABC Domestic Television and ABC Studios will premiere in the United States on the weekend of November 1.

The series marks ABC Studios' first foray into broadcast syndication and has already been sold to stations covering 95 per cent of the American market, according to TV Week.com.

Each one-hour episode will have a New Zealand director and the series will be shot in the Auckland region over 36 months. One of the episodes will be directed by New Zealand actor Michael Hurst, who starred in the original Hercules TV series.

The series is based around a backwoods guide, Richard - played by Australian actor Craig Horner - in Westland, the only part of the world which contains no magic. While investigating the mysterious murder of his father he rescues a woman, Kahlan Amnell, (played by American actress Bridget Regan) who has crossed over from the "magic" side and battles an evil dictator.

Raimi said Australian actor Bruce Spence will play Richard's best friend Zedd, Jay Laga'aia will play a boundary warden Chase, and Craig Parker will play the series' villain, Darken Rahl.

Parker spent four years on Shortland Street after being cast as Guy Warner in 1992, and won international attention after being cast as Haldir, one of Lothlorien's elves in the first two parts of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Laga'aia played David Silesi in four series of the television drama Street Legal, and Captain Typho in two Star Wars films, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.

Tapert, who filmed Hercules and Xena, Warrior Princess in New Zealand and married its star Lucy Lawless in 1998, showed a clip from the show's filming around Auckland.

All information on this site is true to the best of my knowledge and is confirmed before it is posted.

Taken from Craig Parker- Speakers New Zealand. From around 2003:

It can be expected that his newly won fame will not change Craig as a private person. He already has experienced the fact that the press sometimes tends to alter stories and quotes as they see fit.
"A quote can be made to mean anything and in their photo sections there's a lot of innuendo. When that first happens you worry about how people who don't know the situation will read it, how your family will be affected by it", he says. This is why, as Craig puts it, he handles the media with a good deal of "healthy distrust".
"It really pays to keep your private self for the people you like and love. It does me no favours at all to reveal my personal life to people who read magazines."

This site is set up to learn more of Craig Parker's projects by an American fan of his and to give a little insight to the actor behind the screen character of Haldir and his many other roles on the stage, screen, and debating stage. Though I do know Craig and he knows me, I am not in direct contact with him as I am with Bruce Hopkins. All information contained on this site is confirmed before being posted.

If you want to contact Craig for official business or send him a fan letter, his contact address/agent is:

NEW ZEALAND
(For a response from a fan letter, you should send a self addressed stamped envelope with return postage. Don't expect a fast response as Craig gets busy, but he will try to respond when he can. He does say he still recieves the letters from his agent when he visits New Zealand.)

The first time I saw Craig was in the stage play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, May 2001.

Please keep in mind that Craig does not ever go to fansites, chatrooms, message boards nor does he email his fans(he will snail mail a fan letter response when he has the time). If anyone claims to be him within a chatroom, email or message board it is an imposter. I know Craig and he doesn't have time to go to sites on him and he really does not like to read things on himself. The only time he has done a chat was for the Fellowship Festival convention on their official site.

"Fiji blazed on, words coup were still pronounced with a 'p' and used to keep chickens in it.""What need did we have of marriage, we had tans.""Suddenly the cry of sanctity of marriage echoed across the land. Banished were the 'Young and the Restless', 'The Bold and the Beautiful'. And so, 'The Days of Our Lives' were changed forever. Coincidentally enough, it was the same time my parents decided to come to New Zealand. In a decision I can only put down to a hurried, late night flight and too many gins, my parents decided to settle in Glenfield. Here, the story might very well ended. Me, doomed to a life of suburban mediocricy, married with 2.4 children, with only the remains of a fading tan, my fire extinguished forever. However, destiny, she moves in mysterious ways. For it was here I met my great life teacher, my wise woman, my mentor, Rachel Hunter.""We settled into our classroom, remidial woodwork, I working on my spice rack, Rachel working out what a ruler did."- Craig Parker, Great Comedy Debate 1999 (It is better to marry than to burn, negative team) from audio tape bought from the Northshore Libraries Foundation.
